Spiritual Services

Pastor Derek Yoder provides spiritual support to Pleasant View staff members and individuals we support. He also serves the Harrisonburg and Rockingham County faith communities through monthly Faith and Light inclusive religious services at Trinity Presbyterian Church.

Prayer and Spiritual Counseling: Pastor Yoder visits the various locations within Pleasant View to develop relationships. He offers support, counsel, and prayer as requested. Individuals and staff members can also visit the Prayer Room at the Harrisonburg Day Support Services Building.

Shenandoah Valley Faith & Light: Faith & Light
is an international Christian association with intellectually disabled people, their parents, and friends. In 2021, Faith & Light celebrated it's 50th Anniversary.

Monthly services are planned by a worship team and include music, teaching and ministry, and a time of fellowship. Faith and Light currently meets at 7pm the first Thursday of each month at Trinity Presbyterian Church. All are welcom. You may email Derek@pleasantviewinc.org to find out more information.

Library: There is a growing library with books about the spiritual lives of people with intellectual disablities, inspiration and encouragement. Among others, our library proudly includes Pastor Dave Gullman's book, "Teachers of the Soul."

Crisis and Grief Care: Many of the individuals we support are able to age-in-place. This means we provide care through end-of-life events. Pastor Yoder provides spiritual counseling to individuals in our care, their family members as well as those in close relationship–including housemates and direct support professionals. Derek ministers to individuals in the hospital, in hospice at home, and conducts funerals for individuals within Pleasant View. We are honored to be able to provide this type of care that is fully funded through donations from our community.

Pleasant View Worship Team: The worship team is a fun and meaningful community outreach in which anyone supported by Pleasant View may participate. For years our team has been invited to local churches, community organizations, and clubs to share their gifts of vocal choir, bell choir, scripture reading, and message. We took a break during the pandemic, but have started our outreach in a slightly different way. We have started scheduling times to be in community with our church friends. So far, we have had sing-a-longs and collective bell chorus events that include members of the churches we visit. Pastor Derek compliments our visits with his message. Church Support and Liason: Pastor Derek Yoder helps individuals supported by Pleasant View find a church of their choice. He acts as a liason to help individuals or their church overcome obstacles to church participation that may arise. Each year Pleasant View also makes available to any church, March is Disability Awareness Month bulletin inserts.
